Knikkeren - 'Playing marbles'
Marbles were already known before the beginning of our era. However, children have not always played such marbles. In the Middle Ages, for example, round stones, chestnuts and nuts were mostly used. Nowadays marbles exist in all sizes and weights. They are made of iron, glass, stone or clay; fur evenly colored, round and less round.
When it’s ‘marbletime’, the kids go to school with a bag full of marbles. The least attractive and smallest specimens serve as inlay marbles. Only one marble is chosen to be the 'shooter'. Which is carefully guarded and cherished. Losing a shooter may be a small disaster.
