Easter traditions in Poland
Easter is the most important holiday in Poland. The celebration starts on Palm Sunday when people with palm branches go to church. The branches are blessed. The next crucial day of the Holy Week is Maundy Thursday, when a special mass is made to commemorate the last supper. Good Friday relates to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. On Holy Saturday families bring baskets with food to church. The priest blesses what there is inside: colourful eggs, chocolate rabbits, Easter cake or cake that is in the shape of a lamb, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. What is more, we can find salt, pepper, a piece of bread and ham in the basket. In the evening special religious rites are performed in the church. People also come to pray by Jesus’s grave. Finally on Easter Monday children find presents which are hidden in the garden by the Easter Bunny. This is kids’ favourite day. Boys anticipate the Easter Monday, in Poland called ‘Śmigus Dyngus’. It is the time when boys sprinkle girls with water, which is the Polish regional tradition. In the enclosed photos you can see how our students prepare for Easter, making colourful ornament eggs. There are also Easter fairs at market squares, a small one was also in our school.
